Around the Schützenklippe
The trails "Around the Schützenklippe" in Altenau offer hikers three beautiful routes. You don't need any hiking maps for this, the signposts will show you where to go. Discover the striking peaks of the Schützenklippe and enjoy the panoramic view from the rock topped with the green and white town flag. Let your gaze wander over the roofs of the old miners' houses.
Walk along the colourful mountain meadows of the Kunstberg and enjoy the variety of meadows and flowers. How about a quick dip in the Okerteich forest swimming pool on the way to refresh yourself? If the time of year allows, that would be a great idea, or in winter you can experience the untouched blanket of snow, which radiates peace and tranquillity. But no matter when and how you organise your hike: Enjoy the purity of nature in the Upper Harz!
Tour1: From the cliff around the Okerteich
Route length 4.57 km
Follow the route that takes you around the Okerteich. You start in Breite Straße and walk via the viewpoint at the town flag to the Kunstberg crossing with its bench. Here you can take a breather. Then walk along the Wiesenrandweg to the viewpoint of the Kunstberg to the south-west. Continue to the embankment ditch until you come to the Kleine Oker. Stroll through the valley of the Kleine Oker at the Okerteich forest swimming pool and then hike to the meadows of the eastern Kunstberg. Continue along the Gustav-Baumann-Weg, which joins the Kleine Oker road. Circle the brewery once and you are back at the starting point, at the foot of the Schützenklippe.
Tour 2: Zackels End and the Okerwehr
Route length: 4.17 km
Follow the route that takes you to Zackels Eck and the Okerwehr. You start in Breite Straße and walk via the vantage point at the town flag to the Kunstberg crossing: perhaps take a short break here on the bench. Then walk along the Grabenweg to the valley of the Große Oker. Here you will soon see the Bruchberghütte with Zackels Eck. Now follow the course of the Oker up the valley to the Oker weir. The route then continues along the embankment ditch to the Gustav-Baumann-Weg. Continue along this path, which joins the Kleine Oker road. Go round the brewery once and you are back at the starting point, at the foot of the Schützenklippe.
Tour 3: Small round - large meadow
Route length: 2.5 km
This route takes you from the starting point in Breite Straße, via the vantage point at the town flag to the transition to the Kunstberg with its bench for resting. Continue along the Wiesenrandweg to the viewpoint on the south-western Kunstberg. From there, simply walk along the edge of the forest to the Gustav-Baumannweg, which leads into the Kleine Oker road. You circle the brewery once and you are back at the starting point, at the foot of the Schützenklippe.
